McDonald’s Philippines on Song for the Founder

2011 was a milestone year as one of the country’s biggest and most beloved brands celebrated 30 years of magic in the country. McDonald’s Philippines paved the way for the quick-service restaurant industry, introducing products and innovations that serve as a testament to its unwavering commitment to quality and service. And as the New Year rolls in, the celebration is far from over.

Business and industry heavyweights, partners, media, family and friends gathered last January 10 at the Meralco Theater to pay tribute to the man who brought the World Famous Golden Arches in the Philippines—Chairman and Founder George Yang with the musicale “Symphony of My Dreams”. Joining the celebration were esteemed guests and dear friends Hon. Vice President Jejomar Binay as well as Mayor Alfredo Lim and Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon.

“Last year, as we were preparing for the McDonald’s 30th anniversary celebrations, we looked back to how the company has grown and evolved to what it is today. Throughout that nostalgic course, we realized that with the many changes and innovations, there was one thing that remained constant—our Chairman and Founder, my father, George Yang,” said Kenneth Yang, McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO, as he welcomed guests to the show.

This very sentiment gave way to the preparations of a soon-to-be-released book entitled “The Voice Behind the Golden Arches”, done together with ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc. The book chronicles the life, love, and passions of George Yang, and as the younger Yang said, “I learned everything about the McDonald's business from my father so I wanted to give him a book as a special way of sharing everything he taught me, my siblings and the people who have worked with him through the years.”

But a man with such prowess as George Yang commands a much bigger celebration, and was immediately supported by the Yang family, and the whole McDonald’s Philippines team. After much thought and deliberation, the answer was clear – a man with the talent and heart for music, the only top businessman who doubles as a tenor, deserves a celebration that will honor the one who promoted, supported, learned and sang beautiful music.

“Symphony of My Dreams” was born from the efforts of those whose lives have been touched by George Yang. With collaborations from the likes of close friend and music icon Jose Mari Chan and Jimmy Antiporda, seasoned theater actors Reuben Uy and Shiela Valderrama Martinez in the lead roles, and a support cast of 20 McDonald’s employees, “Symphony of My Dreams” showcased the colorful life of George Yang as he embarked on his journey that put together the rich heritage of McDonald’s in the country.

Written and directed by George de Jesus III, with musical arrangement and composition by Roy del Valle, “Symphony of My Dreams” proved to be a fitting tribute to George Yang, and a unique and memorable celebration to mark 30, 60, 90 more years of McDonald’s magic in the Philippines.
